Excerpt from Yamacraw, 1920
In choosing the armorial bearings for Oglethorpe University, none other than the famous coat of arms of the illustrious General Oglethorpe was considered and adopted. The above illustration of the coat of arms of General Oglethorpe, was taken from an old book in the Carnegie Library of Atlanta. The shield consists of a field argent, with a black chevron and three boars' heads, two heads above the chevron and one below. It is surmounted by a larger boar's head, with a green twig and tusk showing. The motto on the scroll beneath reads, "Nescit Cedere."
The original coat of arms has remained unchanged, except the motto, "Nescit Cedere," has been changed to, "Manu Dei Resurrexit."
