Excerpt from Sunday Morning at Norwood: Prayers and Sermons
Almighty Father, whose glory is great in that perfect goodness of Thine which is far above ours as the heavens are above the earth; may that goodness shine upon our hearts, to excite within us the music of praise, to lift us into earnest worship, to set us longing afresh for the best things. May we receive the salvation of Thy goodness, for salvation there is in it when it is truly revealed to the soul. May it be effectual upon us to our redeeming - redeeming from all unwholesome glooms and melancholies; from all unworthy fears; from all impatience of ourselves and irreverence towards others'; from all contented subjection to that in us which inclines to evil, and would listen to the voice of the Tempter. In the light of Thy goodness may'we see our high calling, and with it be made strong to ascend.
Lord, here we are again in the church, talking of Thee, crying to Thee, stretching out our hands after Thee, and where art Thou - that Infinite Goodness which we have never beheld, which never meets us in the way? Art Thou in the summer air that comforts and brightens us? - in the solemn starlit skies that on still, lonely nights touch us with awe? - in the "moist flowers at even" that make us pensive and tender?
