The Importance of the History of Israel. - The history of the Chosen People has a supreme claim upon our interest and attention; it means more to us than the annals of Greece or Rome, or even of our own country. For more than a thousand years Israel was the sphere within which God specially made Himself known to man, in that Revelation which culminated in the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The attitude of God both to the human race and to the individual soul was revealed in His dealings with Israel and its citizens. The Divine requirements are set forth in the demands of the inspired teachers of the Old Testament. The Law and the Prophets, the Psalms and the Wisdom of Israel, set up moral standards which even now we do not seriously attempt to realise.
