Excerpt from Lectures on the Economic Condition of Ancient India
The following pages, my first attempt in writing in English, represent five of the six lectures delivered by me last year on "The Economic Condition of Ancient India," to the Post-Graduate students of my Alma-Mater, the University of Calcutta. The sixth lecture on "Industrial and Trading Organisation" is being incorporated in my next book, Prachina Bharata, while a short one on "The Ramayana from the Economic Point" has been added to the present work.
It has not been found possible within the limits of half a dozen lectures, delivered on different occasions to batches of students, to deal at length with such a vast subject, and I was not able to arrange them in strict chronological order. Those attempted merely indicate its main sub-divisions; and I have illustrated my remarks, as far as possible, by full references to such internal evidence as is to be found in the literature of ancient India.
