Excerpt from Whigs and Whiggism: Political Writings
The suggestion for the preparation of a volume of byproducts of Disraeli's pen came from Mr. John Murray; for the selection and treatment I alone am responsible. I have to acknowledge Mr. Murray's helpful counsel and encouragement, and I have also to express my thanks to Mr. Coningsby Disraeli for advice willingly rendered; to the proprietors of the Morning Post for special facilities for the identification of Disraeli's contributions to that journal; to Mr. T. E. Kebbel; to Sir James Murray; to Messrs. Maggs Brothers for permission to reproduce the Disraeli letters in facsimile from the originals in their possession; and to Mr. B. L. O'Malley for his criticisms and suggestions. Lastly, I cannot but make grateful acknowledgment of my wife's co-operation, which has made the work a pleasure.
It should be noted that the frontispiece, from a dry-point by my friend, Mr. James McBey, does not profess to be an actual portrait. It is rather an endeavour to realise the Young Disraeli from the published descriptions of the period, with the well-known portrait by A. E. Chalon, R. A., in the possession of Mr. Coningsby Disraeli, as a basis.
