The following pages do not profess to contain by any means a complete list of the distinguished names connected with the town of Colchester. No one, however, having as far as I know endeavoured to compile any sort of Index of Colchester Worthies, I have felt justified in gathering together, as well as I could, some particulars of a few more or less noted Colchester characters, and shall be grateful for any suggestions, corrections or additions from my readers, in view of a possible further edition at some future time.
