Excerpt from The United States Among the Nations
In the winter and spring of 1936, the University of California Committee on International Relations, at the suggestion of President Robert Gordon Sproul, considered in several meetings various means of quickening the interest and broadening the information of students in the University, with reference to international problems and the concern of the United States therewith. One outcome of these discussions was a decision to have a series of lectures in the fall semester which should be open both to the student body and to the general public. For this initial series, the theme selected was "The United States Among the Nations" and it was planned that similar series upon kindred themes should be made an annual event.
The 1936 lectures, as delivered, constitute the present volume. As will be seen, all the writers except one are professors of the University, the exception being Mr. Chester Rowell, editor of the San Francisco Chronicle and member of the Board of Regents of the University. Each has written informally as an individual and upon a separate topic. No attempt has been made artificially to harmonize or unify their presentations, or to adopt a precise mode of reference.
