Excerpt from The American Idea Being a Short Study of the Tendency of Political, History
The author of this work was recognized among his acquaintances as a man of exceptionally large mental caliber, extraordinary capacity for profound thinking, and gifted with unusually strong reasoning powers. Had he been a man of less inherent modesty, more disposed to keep in the background than to hold the center of the stage, there is but little doubt that he could and would easily have won a commanding position in the councils of the nation. As a result of the application of well-directed persuasive powers by friends and admirers who were cognizant of his sterling qualities and his eminent fitness for public office, he did serve as a member of both houses of the Indiana General Assembly, as Mayor of the thriving city of South Bend, and later on as police commissioner of that municipality.
