Excerpt from The Child in the City: A Series of Papers Presented at the Conferences Held During the Chicago Child Welfare Exhibit
The papers presented in this volume were read at the conferences held during the Chicago Child Welfare Exhibit, May 11-25, 1911. These conferences varied in form and purpose. Some of them were organized in order that the needs of the less fortunate groups of city children might be presented in popular form by those who had given years of expert service in behalf of neglected childhood. Opportunity was always given for questioning, but the purpose of these meetings was to inform and instruct, or, perhaps, to persuade and arouse, the mothers, the voters, the men and the women with leisure and talents for service, and the other interested persons who attended the sessions.
The other meetings were genuine conferences among those who were already actively engaged in some form of child-caring work and who assembled to discuss among themselves some of the problems of the task to which their hands were set. These conferences were often specialized and technical, and, although the public was admitted, it was understood that the discussions were not only by experts but primarily for experts.
Because of these differences in purpose, there will appear in the following papers marked differences in form and in method of presentation.
