In the latter part of February, 1820, a Greek peasant named Georges, working in his garden in the modern village of Castro, built on the summit of a high mountain in the island of Milo, - or Melos, - unearthed some fragments of marble that induced him to continue his digging, because the stones promised to be useful as material for building purposes.
