The following pages are based upon materials which have long been accumulating. Last January I put some of this matter into shape for three lectures delivered at the Royal Institution, and it occurred to me that as this year is the bicentenary of Pepys death, it might be interesting to give more permanent shape to a sketch of the various points at which he touched the music of his time. Pepys was a many-sided man, and here only one side of him is treated, though that not the least interesting nor the least dear to himself. I feel, also, that to view him from this standpoint is a good corrective to the ordinary estimate of him as only too true a representative of his age.
