Excerpt from Outlines of Physiology
In revising this work my aim has been to fulfill the original purpose of the book in so far as possible. Dr. Jones said in the preface to the first edition: "This volume has been prepared with a view of presenting, in as convenient form as possible, the essential facts of modern physiology as related to the practice of medicine." This object has been kept in mind in the preparation of the third edition.
In this edition the Introduction, the chapters on The Cell, The Elementary Tissues and on the Blood have been entirely rewritten and new illustrations added. A new chapter, with illustrations, on The Physiological Characteristics of Muscle, has been added. The chapter on Secretion has been rearranged. New subject matter has been added to the chapter on The Physiology of Digestion and Absorption. Other minor changes have been made throughout the book where such were deemed advisable.
Especial acknowledgment is due to Dr. Robert G. Stephens for his valuable work in preparing the second edition.
In the preparation of this edition, no claim to original investigation is made. I have freely used the works of other authors when necessary.
