Excerpt from The Complete Poultry Book: A Manual for the American Poultry Yard
The "Poultry Book," edited by W. B. Tegetmeier; and illustrated by Harrison Weir, la everywhere recognised as the standard authority on matters pertaining to poultry, and its descriptions, accompanied by Mr. Weir's excellent illustrations, have performed an invaluable service in fixing the types of the various breeds of fowls. The high price of this work, however, places it beyond the reach of the average American poulterer, while, moreover, it treats of the subject from an English point of view, and has little or nothing to say upon many questions which are of paramount interest here.
Of other English and American poultry books little can be said. They are often mere compilations from Mr. Tegetmeier's work, only departing from bis text to admit gross inaccuracies, or to advertise the compiler's egotism.
In the compilation of this hook, Mr. Tegetmeier's work has been used as the basis, and in many places his text has been closely followed, as shown by the marginal references. It will he found, however, that many important additions have been made, as in that portion of the chapter on the diseases of poultry which treats of fowl-cholera; in the description of the newer American breeds, and in many points relating to the care and management of fowls.
