Excerpt from Civilization and Health
Nothing is more dangerous than strict logic - which is not quite sure of its premises. Some of the most damnable errors of history have been perfectly sound, logical conclusions from data which everybody knew to be sound and no one even doubted, - but which afterwards turned out to be false. Nothing outside of a book ever goes on to its full logical conclusion. Especially is this true in the realm of disease. To paraphrase Hamlet's famous lines, -
For by strict justice
None of us should see salvation.
From the number and deadliness of the maladies that lie in wait for us we have no logical right to expect to survive; and yet we are here in defiance of logic. Of course, this world is a dangerous place and few of us ever get out of it alive; yet the race goes right on firing, somehow, undaunted in spite of the new and terrible diseases that medical science keeps discovering.
It is easy enough to construct a prognostic for any disease which will be perfectly logical and absolutely appalling.
