Eva Schmidt, the daughter of a renowned Austrian nuclear physicist, miraculously survives the Nazis' human experimentation program, though her parents and twin sister are not as lucky. After a harrowing escape from Germany, she manages to reach the United States, where she is recruited to the Manhattan Project as a nuclear physicist. Despite her pivotal contributions to build the world's first atomic bomb, Eva's dream of dropping the terrible new weapon on Germany eludes her. But when Soviet operatives try to extort American nuclear secrets from her, Eva looks desperately for a way out.
