Excerpt from Plato as an Introduction to Modern Criticism of Life
The following pages were taken down in longhand by two secretaries during the two courses I gave in London on some ideas of Plato in Michaelmas term 1905, and in Lent term 1906. I do not prepare my lectures either by writing them out, or by preparing elaborate or even short notes for them; I prepare them only by constantly thinking of their subjects. The consequence is that I am unable to reproduce any lecture as I have actually given it. In correcting the work of my secretaries, I find, as my readers will not fail to see, that while much of the substance of the lectures is given, many another point, connecting-link, and shade has disappeared. For this, the indulgence of the reader is requested. But for my hearers, who constantly asked for these pages, and were kind enough to promise to put up with their necessary incompleteness, the present book would not have been published at all.
