At the close of the preceding volume a few words were said of Isaiah and his mission. That mission was one which reached beyond his age and his Jud?an ministry. It embraces in its sweep our own day, and it binds us to the future as well as to the past. Neither Bible history nor Bible prophecy have a merely antiquarian or merely literary interest. They are like the springs in the valleys that minister God's gift as freshly to the men of to-day as they did to those who first drew from them a supply for human need. We have, therefore, a vital interest in the questions now raised concerning this part of Scripture. The prophecies of Isaiah contain frequent references to the personages, the politics, and the events of the prophet's time. These references are so completely in accord with the historical facts as we now know them that no doubt is possible as to the Book's being a production of the time. Sargon, for example - the great Assyrian monarch - is named in the words which form the date of one of the prophecies: "In the year that Tartan came unto Ashdod (when Sargon the king of Assyria sent him) and fought against Ashdod, and took it" (xx. I).
