Dr Joseph Lathrop, the writer of the two following sermons on the nature and design of a Christian church,was one of the moat eminent ministers of his day, and had the singular good fortune to enjoy the respect and confidence of Christians of various denominations. He is commonly ranked among orthodox divines; although, it is believed, that his writings are in as good repute, and his character as highly appreciated among liberal Christians, as among any other class of persons whatever. And, indeed, it would appear from the general character of his printed sermons, as well as from the very interesting memoir he has left us of his life, that, whatever name he may bear, be was a man of a truly catholic and liberal spirit, as far removed as possible from every thing narrow, exclusive, or sectarian.
