This little essay, first published in 1884, has been for some time out of print, and I should hardly venture to send it forth upon its travels a second time, but for the interest it apparently still possesses for the public. It has already lived a longer and more successful life than I supposed possible. Originally written without any idea of publication, it seems to have proved a convenient compendium of facts which have a general interest.
It has made for me so many friends among the brilliant race it celebrates, as well as elsewhere, that I have an especial pleasure in again commending it to them, and in asking from new readers the same kind and lenient treatment it has hitherto received.
