Excerpt from The Game of Polo
Dear Watson,
It is only just that this book should be inscribed to you, since but for you it would never have been written. Had you consented to the wish expressed by many of your friends that you should write, out of the fulness of your knowledge and experience, a treatise on the game of polo, I at all events should never have ventured on the task. Tint even though you have refused the labour, the credit of this book must still be yours, for what knowledge of Polo I have is derived from your precept, and, still more, from your play of the game of which you are a master, and, in its modern form at least, the creator. Should this book take its place on the shelves of polo players beside the writings of "Dooker" and E. D. Miller, it will be a pleasure to me to think that it may recall to the minds of a future generation of players how much you did for the game and how brilliant a practical exponent of your own precepts you were.
