Excerpt from Hunting Songs
Cannock Chase, over which the South Staffordshire Hounds now hunt so frequently, was, undoubtedly, in early times an oak forest, of great extent.
Plot, in his County History, alludes to the derivation of Cannock or Cannock Wood, quasi "Canuti Sylva." Canute having, in the time of Ethelred, overrun most of the kingdom (Mercia being a part), in which Cannock Chase is situate.
The idea of an oak forest having existed is considerably strengthened by the fact of solitary oak trees being still extant in different parts of the Chase, viz: - Fair Oak, Hangman's Oak, Thieve's Oak, Coppice Oak, Lady Bromley's Oak, Warren's Oak or Teddesley Oak, and Oakedge.(?)
There is also a tradition that a squirrel could spring from oak to oak, from Hammerwich as far as Brocton (some twelve miles).
