Excerpt from Theism: Scientific Theism
I desire to express my acknowledgments to the public, both at home and abroad, for the favor with which it has received a book so abstruse as this, and so condensed in thought as to be intelligible only by very thoughtful and patient readers. If the call for a third edition had not been so sudden and unexpected, I should have added an appendix, containing further explanations in connection with certain really valuable criticisms, - such as those of hr. J. E. Clarke, in the "Unitarian Review" of March, 1886; Professor H. A. P. Torrey,in the "Andover Review" of May, 1886; Ex-President John Bascom, in the "New Englander" of April, 1887; M. Renouvier, in "La Critique Philosophique" of Dec. 31, 1887; and M. Ludovic Carrau, in Chapter IX. of his "La Philosophie Religieuse en Angleterre" (Paris, 1SSS).
But perhaps it is better as it is.
