Excerpt from The Ship of the Soul, and Other Papers
"Be sober, be vigilant."
We are this first day of the year like a fleet of ships about to set sail on a new voyage. As yet we lie in harbour, making ready for the ocean-way, and a motley group we are. Some are great ships, some small; some are newly launched, and some have borne for many years the winds and dangers of the deep seas of life. Some know the great water-paths, and others have no experience. But one and all seek happiness; though what the happiness is, and of what kind, varies as varies the character and the past of the captain of each ship. Each has the Happy Isles before him, and the aim to reach their shore.
