Excerpt from Forty Years at the Criminal Bar: Experiences and Impressions
Changes in crimes, in criminals, and in criminal trials and punishments must necessarily arise; the human element must vary with times and circumstances. During the forty years of my experience as a barrister practising in the Criminal Courts I have witnessed many changes.
The changes in crime and in criminals may be summed up in decreased violence, increased subtilty, and greater combination. Robberies with cruel and sometimes atrocious violence, at one period frequent, are now rare. The only form of brutal crime that still occurs is the wholly gratuitous assaults upon police officers, often quite unconnected with any other crime. Drink accounts for the majority of these assaults.
