Excerpt from The Great Tone Poets: Being Short Memoirs of the Greater Musical Composers
Two years ago I was invited to contribute to the "Et Cetera" Magazine, a series of Articles on the great Composers, to he written in a style that would interest the general reader, as well as the musician. Some of this series duly appeared; and this would have been their first and last appearance, had I not, upon the decease of the Magazine, received many requests from teachers of music to complete and re-publislh the series.
Those articles that have appeared in the Magazine have been revised, and in some parts re-written. New ones have been added; while to each biography has been affixed a table with the dates of the printing the incidents in the composer's life, for the use of those engaged in examinations.
