Excerpt from Practical Mathematics
This text-book has been written primarily to meet the requirements of candidates for commissions in the Army. It includes all the graphical and experimental processes in mathematics prescribed by the Army Council for the "Leaving Certificate" or "Qualifying" examination, and also for the competitive examination for admission to Woolwich or Sandhurst. At the same time the subject matter has not been strictly confined to the syllabus for these examinations, as the inclusion of some additional investigations appeared to add to the general utility of the work, which now covers the course in practical mathematics recommended by many educational bodies.
Several of the examples have, by permission of the Controller of H.M. Stationery Office, been taken from recent Army Examination papers.
Our thanks are due to Lord Kelvin, Professors J. Goodman, G. Chrystal and J. Perry, Dr Glazebrook, Mr A. Earl, and others who have kindly allowed us to make use of their work. Many of the illustrations have been taken from apparatus lent for the purpose by Messrs Baird and Tatlock, and Messrs Becker and Co.
