Excerpt from Our Family Physician
We have long been impressed with the idea that there is a wide felt need in our country for a familiar treatise, in compact form, and at a low price, that shall serve as a reliable guide to the successful treatment of such ailments, diseases and accidents as may be safely managed by any intelligent person without the aid of a physician; a work that should not pretend to embrace all knowledge, or do away with the necessity of sometimes calling a physician, for there are cases which require the application of professional skill and large experience in their treatment. It must be plain to any one, however, that there are a great many cases that can be treated, with complete success, by the aid of such instruction as may be given in such a treatise as this, while there is another class, that require the most prompt and energetic measures in the outset, and which, without such measures, will have run their course before a physician can be called.
Well does the writer remember the sad case of his own family physician, who was suddenly stricken down in his office by that dread scourge, the cholera, and was beyond the reach of remedies before help came.
