It is not to exact scientific research that we owe a number of the best and most effectual of our drugs used in combating infectious diseases, but instead to rough empiricism. I may mention here quinine, iodine, salicylic acid, mercury and arsenic.
The phrase "practice surpasses theory" has even now a certain justification; and indeed, in the present era of exact experimental therapy, we cannot quite dispense with these unscientific - sounding words.
