Excerpt from The Work of the Bond House
About eighteen months ago Mr. Ferrin, the proprietor of Moody's Magazine, requested me to write an article for his publication summarizing the services to the community that are performed by the American bond houses. It was his intention that men associated with other representative houses should write monographs on each separate bond house function. Their articles were to be elaborations of the several kinds of service that I had described in brief.
Whether because of engagements or reticence, the specialists in the various departments of the business, after reading my contribution in proof, suggested that the interest of a comprehensive and uniform presentation would best be served if I undertook the entire series, which I did. This is the explanation of the unusual form this book has taken.
While writing the articles I had no thought of making a book from them; but again I have been governed by suggestions from the bond houses. Certain of them wished the text in convenient form for distribution in quantity among their clients.
