Excerpt from The Spirit of Discipline: Together With an Introductory Essay Concerning Accidie
The title of this book is meant to point towards a thought which under various aspects enters into most of the sermons here printed: the thought of the power which the grace of God confers on men to extend or strengthen, by dutiful self-discipline, the empire of the will. The reality of some such power is plainly suggested by the contrast between those lives in which more things seem possible year by year, and those in which more things continually seem impossible or intolerable; while if there be such power within reach, clearly a mans happiness and usefulness depend to a great extent on his seeking and exercising it. An especial task in which it may be exercised is described in the introductory essay which precedes the sermons.
