Excerpt from Svvm Cviqve: Essays in Music
The articles forming this book have been reprinted by courteous permission of the original publishers and practically without change. That will account for in consistencies of opinion, if such there be. I hope that to be the case, since chronic consistency is a virtue in mummies only. At any rate, no attempt was made to adjust earlier to later views. "Paris versions" are always anachronistic, even if better.
Some readers may miss a reprint of such historical essays as that on "Early American Operas," occasionally confused with my book on "Early Opera in America." They are reserved for eventual publication in a second volume of selected assays.
To Dr. Theodore Baker nay hearty thanks are due for seeing the book through the press and for his masterly atmospheric translation of the German articles.
