Mr. Peile, in treating lawn tennis as a game of skill, seems to me to have written what should be of substantial service to those who care to devote some time and pains to a thorough understanding of the game, and to the improvement of their play; and I am glad to accept the invitation of the publishers to add a few notes suggested by my own experience, and to commend Mr. Peiles book to American tennis players.

It is hardly necessary to speak of the rapid progress the game has made in this country.
