Excerpt from Democracy and the Human Equation
There is every indication that the military conflict which ended two years ago is to be followed by one of a different character and of a deeper significance to human society. On one side will be ranged those who wish to preserve the institutions of Representative Government, on the other those who wish to destroy them.
The author is convinced that Representative Government - whether it is applied in a Republic or in a Limited Monarchy - is capable of performing more efficiently than any other system, and with less restraint upon personal liberty, whatever functions any self-governing people may deem proper to Government.
It would be idle to pretend that the position of Representative Government in the United States is not extremely precarious. It is in danger of being overthrown either by the direct attack of the Socialists or by the flank attack of those who, through the Initiative, the Referendum, and the Recall, are engaged in setting up a Direct Democracy.
