Excerpt from The Portraits of Shakespeare
The list of books consulted in the preparation of this volume will give a fair idea of the mass of literature which has accumulated around the portraits of Shakespeare. Three books, however, stand prominently forth - Boaden"s Inquiry, 1824, Wivell"s Inquiry, 1827, and Friswell"s Life Portraits, 1864.
The excellence of Boaden"s work is marred by its diffuse style. He seems to have endeavored to fill out his book by the insertion of matter which is foreign to his subject, and even in the discussion of the traits of a portrait his many words obscure his meaning.
Wivell"s book is a literary curiosity. He was evidently a wholly uneducated man, and his style is turgid in the extreme. He reprinted much of Boaden"s material, but he also added interesting descriptions of portraits passed over by his predecessor.
