Excerpt from The Voice in Speaking
Since the publication of "The Voice in Singing," I have frequently been applied to for information and instruction by teachers of elocution and by persons whose callings require them to speak in public. My attention has thus been turned to the action of the Voice in Speaking; and occasion has been afforded me to pursue more thoroughly, with the assistance of my son, Dr. Carl Seiler, the study of the natural laws underlying these sounds. The results which we have arrived at are given in the first part of this little work.
As at the present day, with advancing intellectual culture, it becomes more and more the aim of individuals to give a higher and more graceful character to the various modes of expressing the inner life, so was it likewise, as history bears witness, among the most cultivated nations of ancient times.
