Excerpt from The Under Groove: A Novel
It wasn"t until Dinney and I had divvied our swag that I wanted to travel eastward. But I always weaken on the West that way, especially when I"ve got money.
I never could say just how or why it was. Besides, there were too many things, in this erratic life of mine, that were over-hard to explain away. It seemed to have no beginning and no end. It led nowhere. Time and time again I seemed to have dug down to the bed-rock where the "fault" lay, but each time, as I tunnelled and sifted deeper and deeper into Consciousness, some sudden mountain freshet of Memory swept everything from me. So I accepted life as the heap of tailings it was, as the rubble it had proved.
