The Church of Christ on earth has been so long divided into denominations or sects, that the popular impression is, that this state of things is incurable, and that, with all its evils, it must be accepted as a finality. There is, however, an underlying conviction in the minds of good men that it is unnatural and wrong - that it is the reproach of Christianity, not her commendation. Indeed, you may put the question to the first ten men whom you meet on the street, and so general is the conviction that the present divided state of the Church is radically inconsistent with the spirit of Christianity, it is morally certain that nine out of the ten will affirm its inconsistency. "It was not so in the beginning," it will not be so in the end, and it ought not to be so now.
