Excerpt from The Christian Parent
The present volume has been prepared from a deep sense of the importance of its subject, and in the belief that no work of the kind is now before the public. The writer has encountered difficulties, which have doubtless kept back others, and which, had they been all foreseen, might have deterred him from the undertaking.
In the first place, it is not easy to find the proper limits of so vast a field as that of parental education. We might well entitle a complete work on this subject, "A World-Discourse", or "A Universal Guide." For all topics are pertinent to it which relate either to the powers of our nature or to the history of their development. The whole theory of mental, moral, and spiritual influences is involved at every stage of the treatise. The entire circuit of experimental and practical life should be taken in the course it pursues.
