The Treasury of Ancient Egypt: Miscellaneous Chapters on Ancient Egyptian History and Archaeology is the work of noted English Egyptologist Arthur Weigall. One of the world"s leading experts on ancient Egypt, Weigall here passes on some of his knowledge to readers through a series of essays written on various subjects pertaining to Egyptian history.
The first essay to appear in this collection is a logical one, titled The Value of Archaeology. At the time of writing, Weigall states, "though the archeologist can offer acceptable information to the painter, to the theologian, to the philologist, and indeed to most of the followers of the arts and sciences, he has nothing to give to the ordinary layman." Weigall"s goal in this first essay, and subsequently in this entire collection, is thus to present the findings of archaeology to the common man while highlighting the importance of these discoveries.
The author"s essays deal with a variety of topics. From an examination of the temperament of Egyptians, to a story about a shipwrecked sailor, to detailed accounts of discoveries in ancient tombs, Weigall expertly leads the reader through a series of illuminating tales. Images and illustrations are present throughout the book, and while at times difficult to make out, do indeed add value to the text.
While modern understanding of ancient Egypt and archaeology extends well beyond the interpretations of Weigall"s era, this remains a detailed and valuable addition to the literature. An entertaining and illuminating collection, this book deserves a place in any history buff"s library. The Treasury of Ancient Egypt is highly recommended.
