Excerpt from Portraits of Christopher Columbus
"The Lord," says Christopher Columbus himself in his "Prophecies," written toward the end of his life, "has blessed me abundantly with the knowledge of marine things. Of the science of the stars he has given me that which would suffice; so also of geometry and arithmetic. Besides, he has granted me the mind and skill to draw globes and place upon them in their proper places the various cities, rivers and mountains. I have studied all sorts of writings: history, the chronicles, philosophy, and some other arts for which Our Lord quickened my intelligence and understanding."
