Excerpt from The Pedagogy of Physical Training: With Special Reference to Formal Exercises
This book is designed to give help to those who wish to teach physical training. It is especially adapted to the needs of normal school students, college students specializing in physical training, and grade teachers who desire to equip themselves in the teaching of this subject.
It is the result of twenty-five years of the teaching, study, and direction of physical training.
Practically all its subject matter has been presented in lectures and addresses to the writer"s students at Dartmouth College. New York University, the University of Southern California, and the New York and the Battle Creek Normal Schools of Physical Education. These lectures have been repeated by the writer"s students and assistants and in turn set forth by their students in an ever widening circle.
Space has necessarily limited this volume to formal exercise. as the consideration of the various forms of recreation and their appropriate methods of teaching is a large subject. No one, the writer trusts, will judge from this fact that lie considers formal exercise more important than informal exercise. Such is not the ease.
