Alysicarpus monilifer L.(DC.) (Papilionaceae), commonly known as Samervo (Gujarati) or Juhi ghas (Hindi), is a turf forming legume and native to Africa and Asia. In India it is distributed throughout the plains- Madras, Jammu, Bombay, Punjab, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh. It has been used in indigenous system of medicine as anti-inflammatory, in stomach-ache, an antidote to snake bite, in skin diseases and as a diuretic. The leaves are used in fever and jaundice. Herbs show a number of problems when quality aspect is considered because of the various intrinsic and extrinsic factors. Hence, in present work, establishment of the pharmacognostic and phytochemical profile of the aerial parts of Alysicarpus monilifer is carried out, which will assist in standardization, can guarantee quality, purity and also be used to prepare a monograph for the proper identification of the plant. Next we reported the isolation and characterization of compounds from the plant namely stigmasterol and ursolic acid.
