Lament

It"s Venezuela in the late twentieth century, during the disintegration of the elitist Punto Fijo regime, and a mistake has been made. It cannot be corrected by going back to the beginning or restarting. A price must be paid. Andrea did not understand this at the inception of revolution. In those days it was enough just to decide, on one"s own authority, by one"s own standards, what must be done, and who should pay. She came to understand the heavy price her father had paid as a political prisoner who suffered under the self-declared authority and standards of a dictator. Her father, who later turned to the Church, taught her the importance of accepting the right authority and standards, of imbibing the created nourishing truth of God, rather than the warmed-over hash of man. By her father"s teachings, however, she was guilty. Who should pay the price? The narrator, a technical writer, and thus professionally neutral-scrupulously devoted to the accurate description of the inventions of others, but lacking in personal commitment to any particular beliefs is drawn into the chaotic personal drama of Andrea"s life. He learns the value of commitment to foundational truths, and thus reality, and is condemned to be haunted by the constant replay of his memories of a detached life. Lament: A Search for Truth is an allegory, however, for a world-wide menacing situation, threatening the global burst of popular democracy, a situation made all the more critical by the opportunistic use of the instant availability of information. An equilibrium has been established, balancing the elitist manipulative distortion of truth, against the subsequent sounding and resulting skewed influence of the misinformed opinion of the masses.
