Welcome to the Roaring Twenties, a time of unparalleled success in America when business was booming and everything seemed possible. However, in the face of this success, women and minorities still faced discrimination at every turn. On the south side of Chicago, a young black girl decided it was time to challenge the system. Fenger High School offered the courses she wanted to take, but in order to register her family had to take on the school principal and the board of education. Literally and figuratively Elsie and a few of her friends had to cross the railroad tracks that separated the black community of Morgan Park from the white community of Roseland and enter a world in which they knew they would not be welcome. Faced with strikes by white students, unfair treatment by teachers, and financial woes at home, their climb grew steeper by the day. Based on an inspiring true story, Crossing the Tracks is the coming-of-age of Elsie Smith, who transforms from a shy, introverted little girl to a confident young woman as she learns to deal with racism, poverty, and a verbally abusive father to pursue her dream.
