Carlton James and Dr. Vincent Hale have discovered a small 1800s mining town in Amador City outside of Los Angeles in the mid 1950s. In Carbondale, a "gold-rush" town nearby, an envelope labeled "Underground Phenomena" contains interviews with a miner revealing an erratic cult of fundamentalism and apparent primitive superstitions about entire mining settlements being punished by beings from the underground tunnels. After entering the seemingly quiet "gold-country" mining outpost, Carlton and Dr. Hale are surprised to learn that this outlandish story may actually be true. The adventure, written in the "Retro-Mystery" style of the 1940s follows their harrowing experience in dark subterranean chambers filled with beings who have promised miners eternal life in exchange for "who-knows-what."
