Confidence comes from thinking and problem solving that works. This leads to a sense of moving in the right direction. The prescription proposed here is no radical theory of logic and semantics, but simple keys to wake readers up to the reality that confronts them. We have witnessed the limits of value free analysis and cognitive rational thinking in the Socratic tradition. That said we have gone through a period of unconscious incompetence where bosses purported to have all the answers and workers remained passive and reactive to conscious incompetence; where a series of cosmetic changes were initiated to energize the workforce with counterproductive results. The world has changed and workers with it, going from 90 percent blue-collar and 10 percent white-collar to the reverse of these numbers. But the manner of managing, motivating, mobilizing and manipulating workers has remained as if nothing has changed. Moreover, not only the color of the worker"s collar has changed but also the gender and ethnicity of workers. Women have become a dominant force and their natural inclinations have come to have considerable impact on the nature of work and the thinking about work. For example, critical thinking, or basing thinking on what is already known, has proven inadequate in a dynamic world of constant change. Such thinking needs to be complemented by creative thinking, which is thinking not based on what is known but what can be found out. This has resulted in a shift from knowers to learners, from tellers to listeners, from searching for solutions to creating them. It is a new age where the emphasis is shifting from concrete processes to abstract perceptions, from objectivity to subjectivity, from facts to feelings, from being other-directed to being self-directed, from being enamored of information to seeing the value in ideas, from linear to nonlinear thinking, from breaking problems down into particular matter to seeing them whole or as a system. CONFIDENT THINKING, then, is looking forward rather than obsessed with looking backward, of embracing change rather than being obsessed with stability, to being inclined towards challenges rather than defending the status quo, of looking at things multi-culturally rather than uni-culturally, of being inclined towards humility rather than arrogance. CONFIDENT THINKING is a silver bullet for an unconscious age, an age that stays the same, misses the changes because it won"t or can"t face them, and consequently has left the future up for grabs.
