At the time of the 1890 U.S. Census, the Census Office undertook an enumeration of all veterans who had served in the "Union" forces during the civil War. This book lists in alphabetical order the names of about 26,000 Tennessee men who served in some branch of service during the Civil War. While, as noted above, the intent was to cover only Union servicemen, the authors discovered that approximately "10% of those included were Confederates." Several hundred more, not so identified, were probably Confederates, judging from the unit numbers. A list of Tennessee Union units is included to facilitate determining which side a given man served. The information contained includes the names of veterans and their widows, rank & unit served with, dates of service, current PO address, and any disability incurred in the war.
