At its annual meeting in March 1889, the town of Lancaster made appropriation for the preservation in print of its older records of births, marriages, and deaths. The publication was entrusted to Doctor Horace M. Nash, town-clerk, and Henry S. Nourse, who was solely designated as the author. The records included in this work were collected from several sources, including church records, town records, court records, cemeteries, and miscellaneous lists not included in the above sources, compiled by various individuals and organizations. Specifically, the book contains the Middlesex County Court"s Register of Lancaster Births, Marriages and Deaths to 1867; the Victims in the Indian Raids; the Middlesex Court"s Register of Lancaster Marriages, 1718-1726; Marriages and Deaths of some Early Residents not found in the Town"s Records; and Books I, II, III, and IV, of the Town Records of Births, Publishments, Marriages and Deaths, from 1726-1844. Church Records contained herein include Records of the "First Church," Books I and II (1708-1793);Records of the "Second Church," also known as Chocksett Church (1744-1781); Records of the Hillside Church (1830-1843); Records of the Evangelical Congregational Church; and Records of the Universalist Church. Epitaphs were transcribed from the following seven locations: Old Burial Field, Old Common Burial Ground, Chocksett Burial Ground, Middle Cemetery, Burial Place of the Shakers, North Burial Field, and North Village Cemetery.
