I Came in on the Wrong Boat is a simple portrayal of the dynamics that exist within various immigrant groups, and their relationships with each other and with their American hosts. The book further briefly examines the fissures that are beginning to appear within those immigrant groups and the cracks that are beginning to result due to their need to adapt to American culture. Three groups are examined to some detail: the immigrants from Cameroon and Nigeria and their Asian counterparts, the academic achievements of Africans and Asians, and the women"s liberation movement as it affects these groups.
