For the past fifty-two years, the Type Directors Club has encourage the graphic arts community to achieve excellence in typography through its annual competitions. Typography 27, presents the finest work in this field from 2005. Selected from more than 2,100 international submissions, the 205 winning designs are models of excellence and innovation in contemporary type design. This year"s selection encompasses a wide range of categories, including books, magazines, corporate identities, logotypes, stationery, annual reports, video and web graphics, and posters. This year"s volume also features the results of the Club"s ninth annual type design competition, TDC2 2006.
Each winning entry is accompanied by complete information about designer, client, typography, and more. This edition includes a special index listing the principal typefaces used and the names of their designers. The Judges" Choice selections feature winning entries that have been singled out by a particular judge as his or her personal favorite. These pieces are accompanied not only by the judge"s comment but also by a statement from the designer about he creative process involved in developing the work. All these components—along with chairperson Statements by Diego Vainesman for TDC52 and Ilene Strizver for TDC2—exemplify the enormous vitality of the typography profession today.
The second TDC catalog published in 1956 when the competition was first opened up to entrants outside the Club is also reproduced in its entirety. From 1955 to 1978 the competition catalog was produced as a relatively modest booklet. In 1979, after twenty-five years, the TDC Annual was first published as a book.
